Rachel Locke

Rachel has been living and working with dogs her whole life.  Growing up, her family household consisted of more dogs than people (and there were 6 people to outnumber)!

In 2007, Rachel left her 20-year career in higher education and client financial services to (quite literally) surround herself with dogs once again.  She adopted a 12-week-old Shepherd/Border Collie mix from Indiana and decided she wanted to learn everything there is to know about canine cognition, communication, and behavior.

Rachel dove enthusiastically into the dog daycare arena and became the operations manager at two prominent dog daycare companies.  Her two masters degrees in Education and Management (Emerson College) and her undergraduate degree in Public Relations (Boston University) continued to serve Rachel in the dog industry.

When it came to learning dog behavior, orchestrating healthy dog playgroups became an invaluable hands-on learning environment. At the same time, her scholarly side led her to attend dog training seminars, canine athletic events and continue satisfying her desire to better understand the canine mind.

Rachel was already well-versed in the science supporting humane training techniques when she discovered Zen Dog Training. She appreciated how the methods aligned with her personal philosophy and decided to become a Zen Dog Trainer.

Rachel stands at the intersection between canine behavior modification and holistic relationship centered training.  She believes in a relationship-centered approach to the whole dog - body, mind and soul.

She wholeheartedly believes that training and behavior modification should be safe, enjoyable, and successful for both the dog and the humans who love them. Most importantly, she maintains an open mind to every individual - dog and person alike.

Lifelong learning has proven to Rachel that every dog has something to teach their human students.
